New Route Phd - Kent
New Route PhDs (NRPhDs) are equivalent qualifications to traditional PhDs, but integrate some taught subject specific and skills modules with the research element. As with a PhD, NRPhD students normally register initially for a master’s, and upgrade after a period of study. The thesis is up to 100,000 words.
The Kent course
Subject areas
Currently the following subject areas at Kent offer the NRPhD:
- Anthropology
- Management
- Politics and International Relations
- Psychology
The programme takes four years full-time. The first two years consist of taught subject-specific modules, modules in research and professional skills training, and a research element. The modules all carry academic credits, and there are additional non-credit bearing modules available in professional skills training.
At Kent, the credit-bearing professional skills modules are drawn from the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education programme and include topics such as technology in learning and teaching, learning and teaching innovation and research programme supervision. Non-credit bearing modules include communication skills, presentation skills, conduct of meetings, race awareness and using creativity when solving problems.
Years three and four focus more on the research project and thesis, although you also take careers-related modules and any modules suggested by your supervisor which complement your specific research topic.
NRPhD students are assessed annually on progress, in addition to any module assessment. You must satisfactorily pass all modules in order to proceed to the next stage of the programme. You register initially for the MPhil and a decision is made on upgrading at the end of your second year
A national initiative
The University of Kent is one of a consortium of around 10 universities in the UK who offer New Route PhDs. The NRPhD is a national initiative, which aims to provide professional and transferable skills for PhD students who want to operate effectively at a senior level in business or industry or go on to a successful career in academia, in addition to having the high standard of specialist research skills provided by a conventional PhD. In effect, it is a ‘PhD plus’.
This integrated approach offers you a learning environment in which to broaden and deepen subject knowledge while providing the opportunity for interdisciplinary study to extend your expertise in new directions. This approach to studying for a doctorate is unique and will most certainly give students who successfully complete the programme a competitive edge in a rapidly expanding worldwide market.
The programme aims to have enough flexibility to meet the individual development needs of each student.
